Sometimes, we get presented with information that seems to bear no resemblance to the reality we experience. Today, on the BBC News Website, I've just read a story with the headline "Bad weather keeps shoppers away from High Street", maybe it's my perception that is skewed here but I would have expected that people needing to do their Christmas shopping would not have been put off by the weather.
It was the last shopping weekend before Christmas and unless everybody has all of their shopping done already, people would still need to go and buy those presents for their friends and loved ones, regardless of the weather. Most shopping seems to be done in fully enclosed, air conditioned malls and arcades these days. Would the snow outside stop you from shopping in a warm mall? Is the perception of the mainstream media now so disjointed from real life that they expect us to believe this reason for people staying away from the shops?
For me, there seems a much simpler answer.
With many families and people suffering the ravages of the greatest depression in history, many people just can't afford to go shopping for things that they don't need with money that they don't have anymore. They are more concerned with putting food on the table and paying the extortionate prices for everyday essentials.
Perhaps when you're receiving a huge salary from a tax payer funded media organisation the whole world is seen through rose coloured glasses!
